London, UK, city of, and otherwise

Supposedly, there were riots in 13th or 14th century London when people were upset that they were robbed of 3 months' wages when the Crown moved the beginning of the year from March 1 to January 1. Anybody know about this? I don't recall where I saw this, and I haven't found a reference to it since the internet arose.
Kind of reminds me of the radio journalists who laughed at the U.S. Postal Service for spending $7 million to develop self-adhesive stamps - then the journalists then let slip the number of older stamps that fell off each year and a quick mental calculation showed that the postal customers lost $13 million a year as a result! They couldn't do the math!
I once did an interview in which I expressed my opinion that I preferred "amateur radio" over "ham radio" and nearly half of the resultant article was of a supposed major conflict among hams over this!
Is "decent journalist" an oxymoron? As to current differences in politics, it is said it is no accident that Yanks run for office and Brits stand for office. That probably cuts both ways.
Yes, I was always told that people are hanged while pictures are hung
