It could be we are at the point were the first to market a new device
goes bust and a few years later every one has one or perhaps
it is a case of the rich getting it first and the technology trickles down?
Solid State Microwave ovens are in the market now. They ain't cheap,
which is all that keeps me from having one.

You should do a search "solid state microwave oven" as there are a few
hits worth reading.
The basic idea is multiple 250 watt solid state microwave sources
arranged around a cavity. They are individually frequency agile and
their power levels can also be controlled individually. There are
sensors which monitor the foods reaction to the energy. The sensors
report to a computer and the computer uses algorithms to control
frequencies, power and phasing, even different modulation methods. It's
a loop.
