 Sandy and company,

I remember the 'ice cube' modules as well.
Don't ever recall getting one of them to work.

As Howard and others remembered, it was the International Crystal modules that vexed the memory.
Yet to find schematics for them, but no big deal.
Always a work around.

Anyhow....

Been playing with adapting power tool batteries for other duties for a while now.

This is a link to a photo article where I took an MFJ VSWR analyzer gizmo and adapted it to a Harbor Freight Bauer power tool pack.
Went from a few hours of operation on AA cells to days.

https://imgur.com/gallery/OfTkCWI

So far most everybody who has tried it, likes it.

Explained it this way to an aircraft mechanic yesterday.
You stock AA's, D's, 9V's and now DeWalt's.
Just think of it as another size / type package.
That worked.
As humans we get programmed into ways of thought.
Ryobi batteries in Ryobi power tools, not any more!
Once we get past that mindset this can happen.
High quality batteries for other 'off brand' tasking.
Or to steal a line from Frank Perdue "Volts is Volts".

Now to make a 20 volt battery play nice with a 12 volt instrument took a down stream DC to DC converter module.
Don't have an article on that handy, but this will get the idea across.
It's a little module that is a small stereo power amplifier.
https://imgur.com/gallery/xQett
Nice compact housing and a strong insulated case.
Class D amps don't make much heat so that is not an issue.

Had to print the battery slide and a case for the converter.
Many of the Amazon modules are wonderful, but lack a useful way to mount them.
When you make your own housings, that's easy.

About your project idea.
That should be easy.
Exactly what kind of battery do you have in mind?
You would be astonished how specific these batteries are to avoid brand A to work on brand B.

If you want I will try to borrow one from a Norfolk radio club member and work out a battery slide to fit.
On top of that make a housing for the DC to DC gear.

Can even slide in a USB charger or two.

Share a thought.
This might be fun.
Perhaps a club project with others that have printers?

Mike

Are you talking about the epoxy cubes with wires
sticking out the top that look like they were
molded in an ice cube tray? Cant remember what
they were called but they did lots of things.
A useful thing would be a socket to take power
tool batteries with or with out a regulator to 12v or 5v.

Sandy, can I ask for what kind of power tools battery and use case? I see the benefit of the idea, but wonder about all the different kinds of batteries and the battery terminals - requiring a different 'adapter cap' - unless there is a chance the converter PCB can be common to various kinds of terminal adapters (Black & Decker, DeWalt, Ryobi, Stihl, ...) and the applications might be medium duty current load so no loose connections. Also, the mass of a battery holder case could outweigh the advantages of field power conversion.

Would you consider a battery power converter that comes with a rubber band / Velcro strap to be usable in the field? My guess it would weigh in grams with the safety and power converter electronics ?

It's interesting for me as well, as I see the batteries of my drill machine on the shelf. And a whopping big battery charger for it right next to it.

20v Dewalt pack to 12V at say 1-5 amps general field and power outage use. The converter could be the same for most packs ( there are some 60-80 volt packs that might push using common electronics). Plastic would be different for each brand of pack. I don't see it adding more than 1 inch or so to the thickness of the pack ( on the 20v Dewalt packs, the packs with a pillar that sticks up in the tool handle would be bigger).

I remember hearing about old TV sets that sent audio in the room over RF
during normal TV receiving operation and Google can't seem to find it.

Any recollections? Thanks!

I have memories of people talking about building 6 meter rigs using the
IF of TV sets.  I think the rotary tuner could be modded to achieve that.

6 meters and Ch 2 are neighbors.  Just a tweak needed.  I have 3 or 4 of these in a box in the basement:  https://www.radiomuseum.org/r/mallory_inductuner.html
