SUMMARY BRIEF: This small group event will examine MEMS technologies for
Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) applications in several areas
with a goal of catalyzing new product development project initiatives as
well as collaborative R&D relating to ITS application development at our
October 18-19 (Tentative) ITS innovation event here in Washington DC
area. =20

There are now approximately 17 Million traffic related accidents/yr in
America, many of these producing fatalities, and permanent injuries, and
enormous loss of property, lost time, and other resources. The goal of
this small group event and subsequent fall larger "ITS & WIRELESS
KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT" Event is to bring together emerging technologies
such as MEMS and WIRELESS and foster innovations in ITS to reduce this
enormous loss to society through innovation focusing on applications for
our region. =20

SOME RELEVANT SUB-TOPICS BEING DISCUSSED AT THIS EVENT AND UPCOMING
JULY/AUGUST SG EVENT ARE FOR PROJECT DEVELOPMENTS AND COLLABORATIVE R&D
INITIATIVES AT OUR OCTOBER ITS INNOVATION EVENT: (1) MEMS FOR ITS
(include for aerospace and satellites) (2) MEMS Embedded Internet
Appliances & Open Platform Software (3) Optical Mems and Internet
(include optical storage and embedded internet appliances) (4) MEMS &
Software Radio (Wireless) (include emergency law enforcement & police
applications) (5) ITS SAFETY & MEMS SENSORS (Include RFID & RF MEMS,
OPTICAL MEMS APPLICATIONS for truck and automobile safety such as
proximity sensors) (6) MEMS FOR EMERGENCY MEDICAL & TELEMATICS (include
medical sensors and medical applications). (7) MEMS AND HUMAN FACTORS
(several critical factors in highway accidents relates to human factors
such as driving under influence of alcohol, or weather-related=20
influences, driver mis-judgment such as following too close (i.e.
tailgating). Can we address any of these factors through MEMS technology
innovation? =20

A THOUGHT FROM TQM EXPERT DR. ED DEMING ON SYSTEM AND OPTIMIZATION OF=
PERFORMANCE THROUGH THE CONCEPT OF PROFOUND KNOWLEDGE:=20

An organization that seeks profound knowledge is already poised for=
the transformation. Profound Knowledge is composed of four parts, all=
related to each other: (1) Appreciation for A system (2) Knowledge about=
variation (3) Theory of Knowledge (4) Psychologyof individual, society,=
and change. The system of profound knowledge provides a lens through=
which we understand and optimize our organizations. My 14 Points for=
management in industry, government, and education follow naturally in an=
organization guided by profound knowledge W. Edwards Deming, The New=
Economics, MIT Center For Advanced Engineering Study, 1993. REF URL FOR=
