the really good low-noise audio pods usually speak Firewire.
they have 24-bit ADCs that run at 96K or sometimes 192K samples/sec
for (semi?)pro-audio. you can quibble about whether the
noise-floor-limited resolution is 21, 22 or 23 bits, but the net
is that it's a lot more than 16. a version that didn't
need a lot of gain in front of the ADC would likely be
even cleaner. a 2-channel pod is not very expensive and
if you run line-level-in, you'll bypass most of the analog
parts.
