Computer question about .dwf files

You might also try converting the file into a standard .DXF or some
equivalent format.
For example, I found this: http://www.benzsoft.com/dwf-to-dxf.html It's
$90, but comes with a 15 day trial.
If he just has a few files he wants to work with, this might do the trick.
Not so much if he's going to be downloading new files regularly.
Once you have .DXF files, you can import them into
Blender<http://www.blender.org/download/get-blender/>,
which, by the way has just had it's 3D printing toolset updated.

My thoughts on Blender and Sketchup;
Sketchup is very easy to use. Blender is very powerful, but has a steeper
learning curve.

Disclaimer: I use Blender regularly, but I haven't personally tried 3D
printing with it.
