I am an enthusiastic Apple user, but Apple products are just as 
dependent on centralized Internet services as any other.

Services, rather than personal standalone tools, are perceived to be 
where the money is. Adobe has switched its key offerings to the "cloud", 
for example. Apple is getting there.

I think that alternatives will be found in such efforts as 
Redecentralize.
