Is the user interface improved at all?  My experience with a (1st generation) UV-5R is that the UI is not just from another country, it is from another planet.  Just throwing in the towel and using Chirp for all programming seems like a step away from goodness for me.

I'm glad to hear that the receiver is better, but hardly surprised.  The original UV-5R had plenty of room for improvement.  :)
