I think there's something going on akin to Nyquist aliasing

we're subsampling a phenomenon that's more complex and subtle,
and the result is that the more we look, the more pieces we'll
see flying out of the collisions. until we figure out some
other way to "look", it will only get curiouser and curiouser.

that's my speculation and i'm stickin' to it.
