My late mother once found herself staying in a hotel just one side of a state line and time zone in Australia. 80% of the town's working population worked daily in the city just the other side of the state line. On the basis that in Australia, nobody worries about being only half-an-hour late for an appointment, the town adopted a half-hour local time shift.

The joyful moment came when my mother switched on the TV in the morning to the cheery greeting from the announcer:

"G'day! The time is half-past eight, and here is the nine o'clock news."
