Minor correction: it's more like "the alarm will start beeping every
two years whether it needs replacement or not".

Then don't buy it from them; walk into your local Batteries Plus and
get it for a little more than half what Verizon charges, or buy a
replacement on Amazon for less than a third.

I'm not big on float charging wet cells inside the house.  Hope it's
actually a car-battery-sized AGM or gel cell.
