Radio telescopes

Some years ago, AMRAD took a trip down to Green Bank, West Virginia, the site of the

Green Bark Observatory. Those who were there will remember, and those who have a copy

of the AMRAD Newsletter from that time will be able to read about it. It was the home of

a number of telescopes, including a copy of the Karl Jansky model built, IIRC, in his back

yard. Its main attraction was the largest radio telescope in the campus, a monster that rode

on steel tracks while maneuvering to the proper coordinates in the sky. It construction was

helped by the then-Senator Robert C. Byrd, who promoted funding for the thing. Its

predecessor collapsed on top of the concrete building in which the experimenter was

stationed. Unseen corrosion was blamed for the loss.

The basics of radio telescopes are covered in the attached article.
