_ABOUT THE TOPIC:_
Automatic Train Protection (ATP) serves to prevent collisions between
Light Rail cars under worst-case conditions of operator error, equipment
failure, and low wheel/rail adhesion. Typically, the ultimate action
taken by ATP to avoid a collision is the application of emergency
braking. This often results in damage to the wheels. Our speaker will
describe an innovative approach utilizing electromagnetic track brakes
that greatly reduces the incidence of emergency braking applications.
_ABOUT THE SPEAKER:_
Karl Berger is Vice President of DCM, Inc. Transportation Consultants
and chair of the National Capital Land Transportation Committee. His
entire professional career has been associated with rail transit
technology. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with a BS
in Electrical Engineering, he started work as a propulsion system
engineer at Westinghouse Transportation Division in Pittsburgh. Major
projects include upgrade of the Metroliners, commissioning of the Rio de
Janeiro Metro, and consulting for the Long Island Rail Road, Metro North
RR, Santa Fe RR, SEPTA, WMATA, and Tren Urbano in Puerto Rico. Karl is a
registered professional engineer in seven states and is a licensed
amateur radio operator.
