Andre,
Although our Committee members are primarily interested in rail and
public transit, the VTS has elevated us to a full chapter status. The
VTS covers mobile radio communications and automobile electronics in
addition to our transit topics. Perhaps you know people that would be
interested in attending our meetings? IEEE membership is not required.
We meet for lunch in downtown DC on the second Tuesdays from September
through June. We were just awarded the IEEE Outstanding Chapter of the
National Capital Area for 2010.
Regards,
Karl W4KRL

*About the Topic:*
Dan Reiss will discuss the application of Industrial Automation
technology to rail operations. One application is the use of
magnetically levitated shuttle cars in an Integrated Automated Container
Terminal (IACT). The cars employ Halbach arrays of permanent magnets to
provide completely passive, fail-safe levitation. The IACT can extend
several hundred kilometers away from the dock to provide short and
medium haul configurations.
*About the Speaker:*
Dan is a recognized authority on the use of new and advanced
technologies in transportation. His experience includes the introduction
of a systems approach to the handling, storage, and distribution of
break bulk and neo-bulk cargoes as well as semi-automated and fully
automated container handling. He is currently President and CEO of
Automated Terminal Systems; a company engaged in the design,
development, and implementation of fully automated, large-scale
container handling systems.
